Convert cups to ml

1 us cup equals 236.58824 milliliters. Enter a value below to convert instantly.

US cups to millilitres converts American recipe volumes into the measure printed on jugs and scales elsewhere. One US cup is 236.59 mL, which is why metric recipes settle on 240 mL or 250 mL as a working equivalent rather than the exact figure.

Where us cups and milliliters are used together

Following an American recipe with metric equipment

A jug marked in millilitres cannot be read in cups without this conversion. Two thirds of a cup is 158 mL — an amount no jug is marked for, which is why halving and thirding American recipes is awkward outside the US.

Nutrition labels versus measuring cups

US labels use the 240 mL legal cup while measuring cups hold 236.59 mL. The 1.4% difference never matters in cooking and does matter if you are computing nutrition from a label at scale.

Scaling a recipe up or down

Converting to millilitres first makes scaling arithmetic trivial — 1.5 × 158 mL is easier and less error-prone than 1.5 × two-thirds of a cup.

Coffee and drink ratios

Brew ratios are given per millilitre or per gram of water. A '6 oz cup' in coffee terminology is 177 mL, which is not a measuring cup at all — the word means something different again in that context.

How these two units are defined

The US customary cup is half a US liquid pint: exactly 236.5882365 mL. The US 'legal' cup used on nutrition labels is defined as exactly 240 mL, so a label and a measuring cup can legitimately disagree. The metric cup used in Australia and New Zealand is 250 mL, and an Imperial cup is 284 mL. All of these measure volume, which is a poor proxy for the amount of a dry ingredient — a cup of flour can vary by 20% depending on whether it was scooped or spooned.

Rounding and precision

Cooking tolerances are wide, so rounding a US cup to 240 mL is safe for almost everything except baking percentages and confectionery. What is not safe is treating a volume as a weight: for flour, sugar and other dry goods, weigh in grams instead. The cooking converter on this site applies real ingredient densities rather than a single conversion factor, which is the only correct way to move between a cup and a gram.

Mistakes people make with this conversion

  • Assuming one cup is 250 mL

That is the Australian metric cup. A US cup is 236.59 mL — about 5% smaller. In a bread recipe, 5% on the water is a noticeable hydration change.

  • Converting cups of a dry ingredient to grams with a fixed number

A cup of flour is roughly 120–130 g, a cup of granulated sugar about 200 g and a cup of honey about 340 g. There is no single cup-to-gram factor; the ingredient decides.

  • Mixing up cups and fluid ounces

A US cup is 8 US fluid ounces of volume. It is not 8 ounces of weight, except by coincidence for water.
