Why the United States Still Uses Fahrenheit

Every July, some visitor stands next to me at Ocean Beach shivering in shorts, and I get to explain that yes, it really is 58 degrees in the middle of summer here in San Francisco. Then they tell me their weather app says 14, and we both stare at our phones like they’re broken.

That little standoff — 58 versus 14 — is the Fahrenheit-Celsius divide in miniature, and I’ve spent enough years explaining it to have gotten curious about why my country never made the switch.

How a German thermometer maker won America

Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit built the best mercury thermometers of the early 1700s, and his scale traveled with them. The British Empire adopted it, the American colonies inherited it, and by the time revolutionary France cooked up the metric system, the young United States had already organized its tools and trade around the older English units.

Habits like that don’t just fade. They get baked into recipe cards, weather reports, and the dial on your grandmother’s oven.

The metrication that stalled out

We actually tried to switch. The Metric Conversion Act of 1975 declared metric the preferred system for trade and commerce — but made adopting it voluntary. No deadline, no mandate, no dice.

So industries converted only where it paid off. Science, medicine, and the military went metric. Road signs, forecasts, and kitchen ovens did not. Weather was the stubbornest holdout of all, because broadcasters had no interest in confusing their audience, and the audience had no interest in relearning what a comfortable day feels like.

Fahrenheit’s honest advantages

Here’s the part that surprises people: Fahrenheit isn’t simply the dumb scale. For talking about weather, it has a genuinely human logic. Zero to 100 °F roughly spans the coldest and hottest days most temperate places ever see, so it works almost like a percentage of hot. The degrees are smaller, too, so you get finer resolution in whole numbers.

Celsius has its own elegance — water freezes at 0 and boils at 100 at sea level, which is lovely for science and cooking. Neither scale is wrong; they’re just optimized for different jobs.

The handful of numbers worth memorizing

The exact formulas are °F = °C × 9/5 + 32 and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9, but honestly, I never do that math at the beach. I lean on anchor points instead:

  • 0 °C = 32 °F — freezing
  • 10 °C = 50 °F — a foggy San Francisco morning
  • 20 °C = 68 °F — about as warm as my neighborhood gets
  • 30 °C = 86 °F — a genuine heat wave here
  • 37 °C = 98.6 °F — body temperature

With those five in your head, you can estimate nearly any everyday temperature without a calculator, in either direction.

Whichever scale you grew up with, memorize a few anchors and keep a converter handy, and you’ll sail through forecasts, recipes, and travel in both systems.
