What Is a Nautical Mile and Why Ships Still Use It

I like to walk along the Marina Green and watch the container ships slide in under the Golden Gate. Somewhere on each of those bridges, a navigator is thinking in a unit most of us never touch: the nautical mile.

While the rest of us argue miles versus kilometers, ships and aircraft quietly use this third option — 1,852 meters exactly, about 1.15 land miles. It has shrugged off every push toward metrication, and having read up on it, I don’t think that’s stubbornness. The nautical mile is genuinely clever.

One minute of latitude, one nautical mile

The trick is that the nautical mile is tied to the geometry of the planet. It was originally defined as one minute of latitude — one sixtieth of one degree of the arc from the equator to the pole. Sail one nautical mile due north, and your latitude ticks up by exactly one minute.

Nautical charts are gridded in degrees and minutes, so a navigator can measure distance straight off the edge of the chart with a pair of dividers. No scale bar, no conversion, no arithmetic. The latitude scale is the ruler. Try that with kilometers and you get nothing — they have no relationship to the coordinate grid at all.

Knots, sandglasses, and a rope over the side

Speed at sea comes in knots: one knot is one nautical mile per hour. The name is delightfully literal. Sailors used to toss a wooden board overboard on a rope knotted at regular intervals, then count how many knots ran through their hands while a sandglass emptied.

A ship making 20 knots covers 20 nautical miles an hour — about 23 statute mph, or 37 km/h. Aviation borrowed the whole convention, which is why aircraft speeds and wind reports are given in knots everywhere on Earth.

Pinned down at exactly 1,852 meters

Because the Earth isn’t a perfect sphere, a minute of latitude varies a bit depending on where you measure it, and countries once used slightly different nautical miles. In 1929 the international community settled on exactly 1,852 meters, and that’s the number everyone uses today. It stays close enough to a true minute of latitude that the chart trick still works fine in practice.

A few handy equivalences:

  • 1 nautical mile = 1,852 meters exactly
  • 1 nautical mile is about 1.15 statute miles
  • 1 knot is about 1.15 mph, or 1.852 km/h

I find the nautical mile a good reminder that the best unit isn’t always the newest one — sometimes it’s the one shaped to fit the problem. It was designed for a gridded planet, and the planet hasn’t changed.

If you ever need to make sense of a ship’s speed or a flight distance, just remember a nautical mile runs about 15 percent longer than the mile you drive on.
