Milliseconds: How Photo Finishes Are Timed

In elite sprinting, the difference between gold and silver can be smaller than the blink of an eye — much smaller. A blink takes on the order of 100 to 150 milliseconds; races have been decided by a single thousandth of a second. Timing at that resolution is an engineering discipline of its own, and it works quite differently from pointing a fast camera at the track.

A millisecond is one thousandth of a second, and at a sprinter’s roughly 10 meters per second, it corresponds to about one centimeter of track. That is the scale modern timing has to resolve.

The camera that sees only the line

Photo-finish systems do not record ordinary video of the finish area. They use a slit camera aimed precisely along the finish line, capturing that one-pixel-wide sliver of space thousands of times per second. Stacking those slivers side by side builds the familiar photo-finish image, where the horizontal axis is not space but time. Every object in the image is shown at the exact moment it crossed the line, which is why the pictures look slightly stretched and strange. Judges then read off each athlete’s torso position against a timescale rather than eyeballing a single frozen frame.

The clock starts at the gun

Precision at the finish is wasted if the start is sloppy, so the starting gun is wired into the timing system: the clock starts electronically the instant the signal fires. In sprint events, loudspeakers behind each set of blocks deliver the sound to all lanes simultaneously, because sound crossing the track the old-fashioned way would give inside lanes a head start of several milliseconds. Reaction times are measured too, through pressure sensors in the starting blocks, and a reaction faster than a fixed threshold — 100 milliseconds in athletics — is ruled a false start on the grounds that no human can genuinely respond that quickly.

Why results are rounded

Even with millisecond-capable equipment, official times in athletics are typically published to hundredths of a second, with thousandths held in reserve to break ties. Swimming goes a step further philosophically: times are reported to hundredths and genuine ties are allowed to stand, partly because pool construction tolerances make finer distinctions physically meaningless — a millimeter of wall position is worth more than a thousandth of a second. The lesson is that measurement precision must respect the precision of the thing being measured.

When milliseconds decide medals, remember the chain behind the number — an electronic gun, pressure-sensing blocks, and a camera photographing a single line thousands of times per second — and you will never take a race clock for granted again.
