Decibels behave unlike any everyday unit. Twice 50 kilograms is 100 kilograms, but a 100 dB sound is not twice as intense as a 50 dB sound — it is a hundred thousand times more intense. The decibel is logarithmic: each step multiplies rather than adds. That design choice seems perverse until you learn what it is compensating for, and then it starts to look like the only sensible option.
The problem is the astonishing range of human hearing. The quietest sound a healthy ear can detect and the roar of a jet engine differ in physical intensity by a factor of roughly a trillion. No linear scale can chart numbers from 1 to 1,000,000,000,000 usefully, so the decibel compresses them.
How the scale works
The decibel measures ratios, not absolute quantities. For sound intensity, every increase of 10 dB means ten times the physical power: 20 dB is 100 times, 30 dB is 1,000 times. Sound level in dB compares a sound to the threshold of hearing, defined as 0 dB — which is why 0 dB is not silence, just the edge of perception, and why carefully isolated chambers can register negative values. A useful side effect: multiplying intensities becomes adding decibels, which is why engineers in audio and radio adore the unit.
Anchors for everyday life
A few reference points make the scale intuitive: a quiet library sits around 40 dB, normal conversation near 60, city traffic around 80, a rock concert around 110, and the threshold of pain near 130. Two rules are worth memorizing. First, adding two identical sound sources raises the level by only 3 dB — ten guitars do not sound ten times louder than one. Second, perceived loudness roughly doubles with every 10 dB increase, even though the physical intensity has grown tenfold; our ears, conveniently, are themselves roughly logarithmic instruments.
Why the small differences matter
The multiplicative nature of the scale hides real danger in small-looking numbers. Hearing-safety guidance often treats around 85 dB as the level where extended exposure begins to risk damage, and because energy doubles every 3 dB, the safe exposure time roughly halves with each small step: a level of 100 dB delivers energy to your ears dozens of times faster than 85 dB does. A concert at 110 dB versus one at 100 dB is not “a bit louder” — it is ten times the acoustic power hitting your eardrums.
When you read a decibel figure, translate it mentally into multiplication — every 10 dB is another factor of ten — and treat differences of even a few dB with more respect than their small digits suggest.
