A nurse draws up 5 cc of a medication. A motorcyclist brags about a 600 cc engine. A bottle of cough syrup tells you to take 10 mL. Here is the quietly satisfying fact behind all three: a cubic centimeter and a milliliter are exactly the same volume. Not approximately — exactly. 1 cc = 1 mL, always, for everything.
The equivalence falls straight out of the metric system’s design. A liter is defined as one cubic decimeter, a cube 10 cm on a side. Divide that cube into a thousand little cubes of 1 cm each and you have a thousand cubic centimeters in a liter — and a milliliter is, by its prefix, one thousandth of a liter. Two roads, one destination.
So why two names?
The difference is cultural, not mathematical. Cubic centimeter is the older, more literal name: it describes volume the way engineers and physicists think of it, as length cubed. Milliliter came from the liter side of the family and became the preferred term as SI conventions took hold, since SI derives volume from the meter and treats the liter as an accepted convenience.
Each name colonized different territories. Medicine in the United States long used cc in charts and spoken orders, and the habit persists informally, though safety guidelines now push strongly toward mL because a sloppily handwritten cc can be misread (as zeros, or as a u meaning units), and dosing errors are unforgiving. Laboratories and consumer products worldwide standardized on mL. Engine displacement, meanwhile, stuck firmly with cc: a 50 cc scooter, a 2000 cc car engine (usually restated as 2.0 liters). The number describes the total volume swept by the pistons.
A few places the units pop up
- Medicine: syringes are marked in mL; older usage says cc for the same graduations
- Engines: displacement in cc, with 1000 cc equal to 1.0 L
- Cooking: metric recipes use mL; 5 mL is a teaspoon, 15 mL a tablespoon
- Science: chemistry glassware reads in mL; physics problems often compute in cm³
Notice that cm³ (centimeters cubed) is just the formal writing of cc. You may also meet ccm in some European engine specifications — same unit again.
The takeaway conversion that is not a conversion
Because the units are identical, “converting” between them means changing the label and nothing else. 250 cc of anything is 250 mL of it. The only genuine care needed is with neighbors: a cubic meter is a million cc, and a cubic inch — still used for classic American engines — is about 16.39 cc, which is why a 350 cubic inch V8 is roughly 5.7 liters.
If you remember one thing, make it this: cc and mL are the same measure wearing different uniforms, so swap the label freely and save your caution for units that actually differ.
