I have bought a lot of televisions in my life. A heavy tube set, then a plasma, then a 1080p flat screen I swore would be my last, and eventually a 4K panel that made me eat those words. Somewhere along that road, the industry quietly changed how it counts.
TVs used to be sold by vertical resolution — 720p, 1080p, counting the rows of pixels. Then everything became 4K, which counts horizontally instead. The K stands for kilo, a thousand, so 4K promises roughly four thousand pixels across. Roughly is the operative word.
The switch from counting rows to counting columns
A Full HD screen is 1920 pixels wide and 1080 tall; the 1080p name counts the rows. Consumer 4K, properly called UHD or 2160p, is 3840 by 2160 — exactly double in each direction, which means four times the total pixels.
Notice that 3840 is not four thousand. The name borrows from cinema, where the DCI 4K projection standard really is 4096 pixels wide. So the TV in my living room is honestly about 3.84K, rounded up with a salesman’s generosity.
Why every jump is a quadrupling
Area grows with the square of linear resolution, so each generation multiplies the pixel count by four, not two. Full HD is about 2.07 million pixels, UHD about 8.3 million, 8K about 33.2 million.
That quadrupling is why 8K files are enormous, and why each upgrade impresses me a little less than the one before. Past a certain point, at a normal viewing distance across a living room, my eyes cannot resolve the extra detail. My storage drive, however, notices every pixel.

The same fuzziness carries over to cameras and phones: 4K video almost always means 3840 by 2160, while cinema cameras may shoot true DCI 4K. And resolution is only one ingredient anyway. When I compare my current TV with the one before it, the bigger differences come from bitrate, color depth, and HDR — the pixel grid gets the headline, but the supporting cast does much of the work.
When you see a K on a spec sheet, read it as “roughly this many thousand pixels wide,” and remember that each step up quadruples the pixels — and the file sizes that come with them.
